MASP Art School: Dissected Campaign! Ecco a voi Dalì, Van Gogh e Picasso

Tauba Auerbach (seconda parte)

"RGB Colorspace Altas" - 2011- Digital offset print on paper, case bound book, airbrushed cloth cover and page edges.
Binding co-designed by Daniel E. Kelm and Tauba Auerbach.
The books were bound by Daniel E. Kelm assisted by Leah Hughes at the Wide Awake Garage.

Tauba Auerbach does not accept the obvious.  She likes to experiment, even to invert. During her recent visit to the press, she created a series of monoprints in which she focused on what the press does, on its power, rather than on how it fuses ink with paper.  Her goal with the monoprints, as with much of her work, is to capture evidence of process.

Tauba began by embossing paper.  She wasn’t trying to mimic her fold paintings or any other work. She visited a hardware store and purchased a number of ordinary items, including a wire grid, a rubber mat, textured plexiglass, and chicken wire. She then ran sheets of paper through the press over these objects to create grids, parallel lines and patterns.
The raking color seen in the prints is the result of using an airbrush at an oblique angle against the ridges created by the embossment. She would spray a few layers of paint, wait for them to dry, and then proceed. In some cases when the paper got wet, it began to undulate. Auerbach wanted to record that change, which resulted in a topological record.
Eventually the paper was gently flattened.  Similar to her fold paintings, the undulations disappear as physical forms and remain recorded in the paint.

As she commented in the interview in OKTP, she often destroys a large number of pieces before finding one that works. In the case of these monoprints, she kept only 14 of 30.
In these new works, Auerbach is not trying to exert control over certain elements. The joy is in the experiment. She is comfortable with the idea of the piece, and she either accepts or rejects the finished work. The absence contributes to those that remain.

The title of the exhibition draws on the notion of ‘tetrachromatic’ vision. People typically perceive the world around them trichromatically (in varying ratios of three colours). Humans have three types of receptor for the perception of colour with varying sensitivities: red, green and blue. Assigning one axis to the colour perceived by each receptor, the human’s ”colourspace” can be thought of as three-dimensional. A new theory exists that a small percentage of people (for genetic reasons, only women) have a fourth colour receptor, which makes them ‘tetrachromatic’. In order to play on the idea of a fourth component, which, if it could be proven, would radically change our view of the world, Auerbach employs an analogy in this exhibition between the spatial fourth dimension and the spectral fourth dimension.

Since 2009, Auerbach has created a body of work she calls “fold paintings”. By working to efface the boundary between two and three dimensions, these paintings can be understood as an analogy that implies that the same erosion could be possible of the boundary between three dimensions and four. Even if the fourth spatial dimension remains physically inaccessible, the work might be a tool to help better imagine it. In the “fold paintings” Auerbach twists and folds the canvas, ironing or pressing it so that creases are left in the material. The canvas is then spread out and spraypainted, after which it is stretched tight and flat. The result is an almost perfect registration of the previous three-dimensional form of the surface. The canvas takes on a trompe l’oeil appearance, yet it departs from the trompe l’oeil tradition in that the realistic image is achieved by mechanical strategy rather than painterly virtuosity.

Tauba Auerbach (prima parte)

Where direct exchange between sign and meaning is impossible, the beauty of the symbol comes to the fore.
"R" - 2005 - Ink on paper
"V" - 2005 - Ink on paper
"Maritime A-Z" - 2006 - Gouache and pencil on paper
"L" - 2007 - Ink on paper
"O.K.'s" - 2007 - Gouache on paper
"Yes/No Morph I" - 2007 - Gouache on paper mounted to wood panel
"Creation/Reaction" - 2008 - Gouache and pencil on paper mounted to wood panel

Tauba gioca con costrutti binari elementari, filosofeggia su estremi opposti in divenire, dove l'arte sembra quasi piazzarsi al centro, veicolando da un opposto all'altro lo stesso cambiamento, la trasformazione o la semplice essenza del Yes/No, Black/White, On/Of, HERE AND NOW/AND NOWHERE.

The philosophical conflicts explored in the work include:
The liminality, or intermediate state between two dimensionality and three dimensionality.
The past and the present.
A combination of the two: a past three-dimensional state and a present two-dimensional state.
Being HERE vs. Being THERE, and being both HERE and THERE at once.
Randomness vs. Determinism and the unpredictable order of chaos.

"Shatter II" - 2008 - Acrylic and glass on wood panel
"Shatter III" - 2009 - Acrylic and glass on wood panel
"Crumple I" - 2008 - Acrylic and UV cured inkjet on canvas
"Static 1" - 2008 - C-print
"Static 4" - 2008 - C-print
"Static 9" - 2009 - C-print
E come indicato sul G:CLASS MUSEUM:
For instance, her photographic series Static (2009) is comprised of close-up views of kaleidoscopic static waves from soon-to-be-outmoded analog television signals, which, when examined closely, appear to break apart into a pixilated digital snowstorm. Similarly, her recent series of paintings on canvas titled Crumple (2009) appear to be black and white renderings of crumpled pieces of paper when viewed from a distance. However, when examined at close range they transform into undulating fields of black dots.

ICCO used as references conceptual work of Otl Aicher, Lingua Grafica, and successful cases of national branding such as "Nobrand" in Argentina and "Chilogo" in Chile.

When I was a kid, I used to draw very Manga looking illustrations. I was good technically but didn’t have a style of my own. I was drawing compulsively but not really thinking of how I would make it my own. I happened quite late actually. I almost happened by accident as I was exploring doing an illustration for an erotic design magazine back in 2006! I started paring down my illustration and ended up with a triangle and a couple of shapes to define the female body. I felt there was something there and so I kept on going. From that point, it took a couple of years to refine my style. I feel it is evolving constantly. I am trying new things all the time. Some work, some don’t.
The core of my aesthetic had always been there though. I have always liked organic shapes and bold colours, even when I was very young. Editing is the key.
When you are an illustrator the challenge everytime you get a commission such as this one is to hit the right note, no matter how many goes you have at it .Most importantly: the end result has to look effortless so that all those rounds of feedback and changes have to disappear behind that end result. The process behind a project like this is however much more time consuming and sometimes challenging than it looks.
[..]
I was approached last summer by the art director of the series, Paul Buckley. He had seen some of my work on blogs and thought I would be a good match for their new release of the naughty classic. I remember thinking that it was the absolute perfect project for me! To be honest, I thought it would be an easy one, right up my street but sometimes the most obvious projects just tend to be the challenging ones.
Very COOLLL! :D
